A short history of Greding castle

Nearly nothing has been recorded about the history of the castle in the middle ages. But the coat of arms of Bishop Martin von Schaumburg proves that in the 16^th century building projects had already been undertaken.

Far more detailed information is available about the “new-building” from the 17^th century. On the oriel, Princebishop Euchar Schenk von Castell left the following record on his coat of arms:

Jo Eucharius Deigratia Episcopus Eystettensis S.R.I. Princeps has Aedas ex Fundamentis Fieri Fecit Anno Dni1696

Jo(han) Euchar, Bishop of Eichstätt, Prince of the Holy Roman Empire let this building be raisee from the ground in the year 1696

The building was most probably planned by the architect Jakob Engel (Giacomo Angelini 1632-1714). After the secularization, the castle was left to the last Princebishop of Eichstätt, Joseph von Stubenberg (1790-1824), for life-time use.

In recent times different agencies of the Bavarian government have used the extensive premises – for example, the “Wehrtechnische Dienststelle für Informationstechnologie und Elektronik” (defense technical agency for information technology and electronics).

Since 1988 the location has been owned by the Ehrl family. The buildings have been restored carefully regarding art historical aspects and developed into a well-known meeting place for art enthusiasts and collectors from all over the world.

The splendid baroque building with its impressive halls offers a unique setting for the presentation of the most diverse art, and collectable objects such as: sculptures, paintings and furniture. You will find here carefully chosen items!
